AirAsia Live it Up in the Air Challenge

AirAsia, the world’s best low cost airline, will be embarking on a new lifestyle initiative in Singapore, and involves the first-ever nationwide public engagement exercise. This challenge will be driven primarily via Social Media, with $20,000 worth of prizes up for grabs.

I was invited to attend the media announcement for AirAsia  Live it Up in the Air Challenge which was held at Reebonz Singapore.
I was first greeted by AirAsia's Cabin Crew and the PR personnel before I was led to 'check in' and 'board' my plane.

This event was hosted by AirAsia Group Head of Commercial Kathleen Tan, and AirAsia Singapore CEO Logan Velaitham.

Kathleen is so bubbly and chatty in person. She even did the "I can fly" action. 

We had a close to authentic plane boarding experience as we were guided through the safety precautions first before the plane "takes off".

During the media announcement, Kathleen shared with us how everyone can get to win up to S$20 000 worth of AirAsia air travel vouchers.

AirAsia will be launching the AirAsia Live it Up in the Air Challenge, where cabin crew hopefuls will get to be an active cabin crew trainee on an AirAsia flight for 5 days. Up to S$20,000 worth of prizes will be up for grabs to these hopefuls as well as public voters who will be part of the selection process. All-expenses paid for a 5-days cabin crew training course at the AirAsia Academy in Kuala Lumpur.

Application and voting will be via a specially developed application on AirAsia Singapore’s FaceBook page (https://www.facebook.com/AirAsiaSingapore).

Phase 1 – Recruitment
From 22 – 28 October, AirAsia will be heading down to Orchard Cineleisure (26 – 28 Oct), as well as tertiary education institutions Singapore Institute of Management (22 – 23 Oct) and Temasek Polytechnic (24 – 25 Oct) to call for entries. Interested contestants can take and submit a short 30-second video at specially set-up booths at the various locations where they share with us on why they should be chosen. These videos can also be uploaded anytime, anywhere, via the FaceBook application.

Phase 2 – Public Voting (Round 1)
Once uploaded, the videos will be viewed by more than 35,000 AirAsia Singapore FaceBook fans where they will vote for their favourite contestant and the 50 contestants with the most votes will move on to the next stage.
Voting period is from 29 October – 2 November.

Phase 3 – Audition
On 10 November, the 50 shortlisted contestants will undergo an audition where they are required to do a catwalk and ice-breaker activities with the AirAsia Panel of Judges, which will be made up of members from AirAsia’s Flight Attendants department. The final 12 candidates will be selected from here.

Phase 4 – Crash Course
The 12 finalists will then undergo a streamlined 5-day* all-expense paid cabin crew training course (12 – 20 November) at the AirAsia Academy in Kuala Lumpur where they will learn the necessary safety, technical and customer service training. Once completed, they will be able to board a flight as an AirAsia Trainee Cabin Crew and be able to experience customer service related tasks and situations up in the air.
*AirAsia advocates safety in all AirAsia aircraft and flights. As this is a challenge, the crash course has been specially tailored to allow contestants to take on ONLY customer service related activities and NOT safety or emergency evacuation procedures which require 52 days of training. Contestants will be under the constant supervision of the AirAsia cabin crew.

Phase 5 – In-flight Challenge
From 22 – 26 November, each of these 12 finalists will be attached for 5 days to one of 13 direct routes that AirAsia operates from Singapore. These include routes to Bali, Bangkok, Clark, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Langkawi, Phuket and many more. On board the flight, they will be faced with some of the most common in-flight “tricky situations” involving some passengers. The handling of these challenges by the finalists will be filmed and the footage will be uploaded onto the FaceBook application.
Samsung NX1000 Series camera will be used to captures stills and videos throughout the campaign.

Phase 6 – Public Voting (Round 2)
Public will get to vote for their favourite cabin crew that they feel handled the situations best and the top 3 finalists with the most votes will be presented once again to the AirAsia Panel of Judges. The eventual winner will be chosen by the judges based on the videos filmed during the in-flight challenges.
Voting period is from 27 – 29 November.
